Riad des Palmiers

Beautifully situated riad, peace amid the bustle

"We chose this riad for a family holiday at Easter. The accommodation was ideal, spread over three floors built in traditional style around a prettily tiled open central hallway reaching up to the roof terrace. There was plenty of space to spend time together, with rooms inside, a sheltered garden (with small pool, a real bonus), balconies and a kitchen in each storey, or to get away from each other for a quiet read in the big comfortable beds. We were enchanted with the medina, its busy daily life and colourful, friendly characters, not least the very jolly and helpful house manager Abdul and his sweet and quietly efficient English speaking assistant Fouzia. We quickly became familiar with the maze of tiny streets with the help of Diane's invaluable map, and also found good advice on shopping and haggling in the house copy of Lonely Planet. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from, but our most memorable evening was spent at tiny Tagna8 just around the corner with a delicious, inexpensive chicken and lemon tagine and a very spirited impromptu performance by local traditional musicians which all the restaurant staff joined in! A most happy, relaxed and comfortable holiday in a beautiful, peaceful house just moments away from all the attraction of a lively and historic tourist destination and the activity of a productive fishing port - we would recommend Riad des Palmiers unreservedly to anyone looking for well situated, flexible accommodation in a most appealing seaside town."

Reunion

"I was one of six old school friends who hadn't met for 40 years and decided on this ancient Riad in Essouira. We could not have wished for better. Comfortable, stylish, spotlessly clean and very relaxed with the 3 guest floors centre around a lightwell and ornate iron staircase. A large balcony on one level overlooks the garden and to the sea beyond, a roof terrace provides views over the town rooftops to the sea. At ground level, a paved garden provides a cool oasis and pool protected by the high Medina wall. Kitchens are available on each floor for a bit of self catering but within easy reach there are some splendid restaurants.

Each room is en suite and all have very comfortable beds . We slept like logs in between all our activities - cookery class at a local restaurant is a must and Diane (the Riad owner) will be only to pleased to assist with booking.

The staff are very helpful and will help with organising excursions, taxis from airport, restaurant bookings etc and can provide two centre arangements with another very glamorous Riad in Marrakech."

Essouira is wonderful, a tapestry of everything Arabic, African and European all in one hit. The locals are warm and friendly and there is an obviously immense pride in being Moroccan. The climate is pleasant , plenty of sun and 28 degrees , but a breeze that makes it very comfortable.

We took up the whole Riad but it can be rented by room, floor or whole Riad - fantastically flexible

Room Tip: Facing the sea on the second floor

Magical Accommodation

"Utterly beautiful, serene accommodation to a very high finish. I can't recommend this place enough. Utterly relaxing garden enclosed by the original medina wall combined with a roof terrace to take in stunning views across the magical town of Essaouira. The rooms are all ensuite, extremely comfortable and have very individual characteristics. Perfect Moroccan decadence at a fantastic price.

One of the best holidays ever...

"Essaouira in winter was a great surprise. It’s a beautiful town, the harbour one of the most exciting places and the Riad des Palmiers is a great place to be for an extended family. It easily fits 12 persons and it never feels crowded. Beautiful garden and terraces for joint use and great rooms all with private bathrooms in case you want some privacy. And always the choice to be in or outside the wind. The view is terrific and it doesn't feel ''locked'' into the Medina. It has a real Maroccan touch with beautifil tiles and cozy furniture and well equipped kitchens. A minute walk only to the local shops and the heart of the Medina"

Riad des Palmiers is fantastic

“Know this beautiful part of Morocco fairly well and on last trip wanted somewhere a bit special for family celebration. Did a lot of research and definitely made the right choice. Perfect location just inside Medina walls. We were able to relax as if we were in our own place. Great staff, only there when you needed them. Stylish house and look forward to returning

Would advise that for 4 or more people well worth trying to book the whole 3 floors. Plunge pool, tortoises in lovely garden. Sun roof available to all and the top floor has beautiful sun terrace

Weather was also fantastic everyday. Returning at 4am to Manchester with minus 4 temp we all really missed our Riad des Palmiers!

We had a wonderful holiday

“I just wanted to let you know that we had a wonderful holiday in Essaouira. After the hot and polluted hell that is Marrakech medina it was fantastic to be somewhere less crowded and frantic, with clean air and a slower pace of life. The riad is beautiful – very comfortable and with everything we needed and we loved the garden and pool and tortoises! Abdul and mam’selle who did the cleaning (apologies we didn’t discover her name) were very friendly, conscientious and unobtrusive. All in all, we would love to return to Essaouira and Riad des Palmiers for a longer holiday and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the riad to friends.“

Lovely Palmiers

“This Riad is a gem. The owner, Diane, has restored the property to an excellent standard, keeping its essential character and adding touches of her own decor to make the place truly special. The place is more open and airy than most riads in the Medina, due to the very large light well and the beautiful garden behind the house. The garden is very private, and backs up to the city wall -- a really gorgeous setting for sunbathing or having dinner under the palms. The little pool in the corner is just perfect for cooling down if you are lounging in the sun and feeling a bit too toasty. This is a really delightful house! I would recommend it highly, and hope I have the chance to stay there again. That garden makes me want to return!“

Calm, chic, perfect!

“This riad is stunning. Everything is done to such high spec, and the interiors are simple but classy. It's a wonderful place to stay, and each floor has access to somewhere you can relax and sunbathe. There's so much space on each floor so given that I think it's excellent value.“

Memorable

“A beautiful riad divided into 3 floors, each decorated and done out tastefully. Great to have your own kitchenette too.The secluded garden was lovely and you can hear the sea which is so close by. Situated in a great location, we loved staying here so much we have booked to go back again next year. We enjoyed our neighbours staying on the other floors, and had nice chats (over a few glasses of wine of course) most evenings. Abdul and Faouzia couldn't have been more helpful when needed. "

Exceeded our expectations by far!!

“From the booking stage to our departure we could not have asked for more. Diane our contact made sure everything was looked after from maps, transfers, eating out listing... to Abdul and Faouzia who were professional, friendly and discreet. The place is right in the medina and has all you need with kitchenette, sunroof, plunge pool...The deco is amazing.

We couldn't fault anything! We had the honour of having Faouzia cooking for us on our last night and it was by far the best meal we had during our holidays so I hightly recommend that! Abdul was so kind to get up at dawn to make sure taxi was there and all was fine on our departure.

We were meant to spend 1 night in Marrakech but after the experience we were having there we decided not to go anywhere! I have been in the hotel industry for over 10 years and honestly I have no problem recommending this place. Again thanks to Diane, Abdul and Faouzia! "

Charming Riad

“I stayed at the Riad des Palmiers with friends and our children and we had the whole place to ourselves, which was great. Service was friendly and good. The Riad is comfortable, and relaxing to be in; it has lots of space and charm. We were able to relax in the lower garden as well as sun bathe on the terraces. It's very centrally located for shops and amenities, which was great for the 'breakfast run' for fresh bread, pastries and coffee; it's also close to the beach. I would definitely go back again. The owner of the Riad, Diane, is wonderful and she helped enormously in making my complicated travel arrangements go as smoothly as possible. Thanks, again, Diane."

Highly Recommended

“Very unique, with a small garden against the ramparts and only riad with a plunge pool in Essaouira combining to make a sheltered oasis against the sometimes cold winds. Lovingly restored. The decor is a stylish mix between European and Moroccan. The owner Diane dealt with our booking very professionally and we were met as arranged off the bus by her friendly manager Abdul!
A quiet sanctuary away from the busy streets and very good for a relaxing holiday for a family! "

Beautiful self-catering riad

“This was a very lovely self-catering riad - certainly the only self-catering riad we stayed in. Liked having our own kitchen - and had the place to ourselves, so sat around the pool in total tranquility. This riad was a bit more rustic than your typical Marrakech or Fes riads, but we liked that in particular. Finally, I've marked the service at 5 star because it was exactly as we wanted - Abdul mainly left to ourselves, but somehow was there whenever we needed him! "

Pur bonheur!!!

“Nous sommes ravis d'avoir pu profiter durant un mois de tout le confort de cette grande et belle maison idéalement située et dont le patio est un véritable écrin de paradis: à noter la présence d'un bassin,ce qui est assez exceptionnel à Essaouira ! De plus, les services de Fouzéa qui s'occupe de la maison ( inclus dans la location de la maison) sont un vrai plus pour passer des vacances reposantes. "

Very Elle Decor!

“I don't even read this magazine, but that's what I thought of when I saw the inside of Riad des Palmiers! I think it was the marvelous eclectic furnishings of this lovely riad; painted antique furniture alongside contemporary metal bedstands; shiny brass hardware alongside antique deadbolts, old stained glass windows fitted with modern shutters, a great mix of vintage and new. And the whole place filled with beautiful and unusual tilework, We had the entire second floor, 2 bedrooms w/bath and/or shower, a nice kitchen and a sitting room and access (via spiral staircase) to the little pool and patio area. We ate breakfast there one day, but most of the time it was being used by the first floor tenants.
Abdul met us at the Supratours bus station as promised and he was charming. We were told that he spoke only French, and were happy and relieved to find out that he also spoke Arabic. My son's girlfriend speaks Arabic, so was able to communicate for us. He walked us to the riad, not too far into the Medina, which was nice, gave us the tour and the keys and was off.
We were in Essaouira during the Gnaoua Music Festival, so the town was packed with people. And sad to say I was not as vigilant as I should have been and my camera got stolen. I had been warned about the possibility of pickpockets, but am too trustworthy I guess. Other than that (and the very loud seagulls!) the town was easy to navigate and although windy, the breeze kept things cooler. The beach was great (with camels you could ride-touristy but fun to see) and we had some of the best food our our trip at ELIZIR, which lucky for us was just a stone's throw from our riad. Thanks Diane for all your help, and to Abdul and Fouzia-Shukran/Thank You "

Moroccan heaven

“Just got back from 10 days Essaouria at the Palmier and I crave to be there right now! Beautiful restored home with all the right details, helpful house manager, a quiet retreat that was heavenly. I can still close my eyes and hear the gulls and the ocean, sigh. Ended up forgoing Marrakech to stay here I loved it so much. Highly recommend! "

Lovely relaxed stay

“The riad itself has been really nicely restored, with lots of quirky detailing - having stayed in some riads that felt like rather austere hotels, it was nice to see a place that had a lot of character and personal touches. It felt very homely and we had lots of room to spread around.
The beds were really comfy, bathrooms are nicely done, and the resident maid (Fouzia) was amazingly attentive so the house always felt spotless (I kept finding that she'd folded all my clothes and put them away!). Having access to our own kitchen (and the terrace) meant that there was plenty of space to laze around with a book or cook your own food, which made a big difference to us since it meant there was no pressure to go out (keeping the cost down).

The location is pretty stunning in that the house is actually set into the medina wall and has a great sea view. However it is set in a quiet residential area rather than the tourist district. This wasn't a great problem for us since pretty much nothing in Essaouria is more than a 10 minute walk away, but I think it would be more of a boon to a family or a group than to a young couple.

Overall we had a lovely, relaxed stay and this place is a fantastic find for the price. I wouldn't hesitate to stay again!"

Great escape

“We've just come back from five days in Essaouira - a great place to escape from the UK winter, so sunny and relaxing. We stayed at Riad des Palmiers and would highly recommend it. We were told it had recently been renovated - certainly it felt new and clean, with great facilities such as a kitchen in each apartment and all bedrooms with ensuite bath/shower. Plus there is a wonderful sheltered garden, a pool and upper sun terrace with sea views. The house is very tastefully done, and is full of light and sunshine (we had almost forgotten what that looked like!).

No breakfast, but we found a small bakery selling freshly baked baguettes for 1 dirham and less than a minute's walk away! Essaouira itself is great - small and perfectly formed - and you can find pretty well everything within a 5 minute walk. We ate out (without breaking the bank) at a different place every day and had some really memorable meals - Taros, Elizir and Sirocco were all top-notch.

We’d unhesitatingly recommend both Essaouira and Riad des Palmiers.”

Wonderful riad in the incredible medina

“Riad de Palmiers is beautiful - great location, easy to find, situated just inside medina wall. I stayed in an apt with 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, kitchen, salon, and access to the garden. The rooms are spacious with very comfortable beds, the bathrooms have excellent fixtures, and the kitchen is well-equipped. Both the garden and the terrace are peaceful, quiet, places to relax. The caretaker for the Riad is extremely helpful and very knowledgeable about everything in Essaouria. I will definitely stay here on my next visit to Essaouria.”

A Beautiful Riad in the heart of Essaouira

“I stayed in Riad de palmiers with friends in September. It had just finished being renovated to a very high standard. There is a lovely plunge pool in the garden and the accommodation was very comfortable and ideally located in the town with amazing views from the balcanonies and roof terrace. Abdul and Fiaza who look after the property were very helpful and made us all a lovely meal during our stay. I will be staying again and will be recomending it to family and friends.”

Perfect for a relaxing break

“We have recently returned from a stay in the beautiful Riad des Palmiers. This traditional town house has been lovingly refurbished to a high standard to create an atmosphere of peace and tranquility within the walls of the old town of Essaouira.

The house is arranged over 3 floors , with an additional rooftop terrace, and could easily accommodate a group as large as 10, although each floor is self contained and can be rented individually. Our group comprised two families with teenage kids, and having the run of the house worked really well for us.

The position of the house is ideal: Right in the heart of the old town, near all the souks and restaurants, yet only a 5 minute walk from the magnificent beach. Perfect!”

Superb accommodation, beyond all expectation

"After spending three days in Marrakesh, this riad offered a haven of peace. The accommodation was absolutely fabulous, recently refurbished in traditional Morrocan style and filled with beautiful vintage furniture and fittings, the owner has obviously put a lot of time and effort into the riad and this shows. We spent 3 nights in the ground floor accommodation which was extremely roomy and consisted of 2 bathrooms, a garden and use of a top floor roof terrace, a kitchen, 2 bedrooms and a salon.
Highly recommended."

Tasteful and comfortable riad in a beautiful and characterful
seaside town

"We stayed in the ground floor apartment and so had direct access to the garden, which was very pretty and had plenty of furniture to laze around on and eat breakfast. We didn’t discover the tortoises until about the third day,
but they provided much amusement after that! The pool wasn’t full when we arrived but an email to the owner had it sorted immediately and it was nice to have a plunge in the late afternoon. The riad is beautifully furnished and has everything you need for a comfortable stay. It is built into the medina wall, down a little alley and is totally peaceful – next door were having some building work done but it didn’t really disturb us. If you wanted to cook for yourselves,
the kitchen was well equipped and shopping in the local markets is fun and dirt cheap. Don’t miss the olives!
After Marrakesh, Essaouira was a joy! The sea breeze and sunshine and the relaxed friendly people. We had the added bonus of a music festival – we didn’t know about it beforehand but enjoyed three or four excellent concerts.
Our favourite bits were walking around the port and the ramparts, shopping in the markets, coffees and mint teas in
the square, eating at Les Alizes and La Layounne restaurants and breakfasts of fresh croissants and freshly squeezed orange juice in the garden of Les Palmiers.
Didn’t want to come home!"

Peace, privacy and fun in the heart of the medina

"Riad des Palmiers is a truly charming place to stay in a quiet yet still very central location. We had a whole floor to ourselves, open at one end with a large balcony looking out to the sea. Accommodation was spacious, simple but with some lovely decorative features. We had a large bathroom with plenty of hot water and a very well equipped kitchen which was cleaned and tidied for us. We left with a very strong sense of all staff servicing the riad with enormous care, friendliness and attention to detail.

Booking and transfer arrangements could not have been more straightforward. I would definitely recommend the riad, both for itself and for the fact that Essaouira is such a fun and laid back place to hang out. We very much look forward to returning."
